New Report: Marijuana Vaping Rising Among Teens

Last Updated: Thursday May 16, 2024

In 2019, 14% of high school seniors admitted to vaping marijuana in the past month, according to the most recent Monitoring the Future Survey.

That number is almost double 2018’s percentage, and marks the second largest one-year increase recorded in the survey’s history.

Between 2018 and 2019, past month marijuana vaping also rose among 8th graders (from 2.6% to 3.9%), and among 10th graders (from 7% to 12.6%). See the infographic below for more information.

Why Are Teens Vaping?

Vaping, of both nicotine and marijuana, has increased significantly among teens in recent years.

A majority of them surveyed say they vape because they want to experiment, or to see what it’s like. A little bit over 40% say they vape because it tastes good. Check out the infographic below for more answers to this question.

The annual Monitoring the Future Survey measures drug use and attitudes of public and private school students from across the nation.  More than 42,000 eighth, 10th, and 12th graders participated in this year’s survey. The survey is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and conducted by the University of Michigan.
