About 30 percent of new heroin users become dependent in the first year

(Fox47 News, June 6)  About a third of new heroin users develop a dependency on the drug within a year, according to a new Michigan State University study. Previously, the estimate was 20-25 percent.

The researchers looked at data collected between 2002 and 2016 from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). They identified more than 1,000 new heroin users and studied their experience with their drug since their first use. Read more.
