Violent Behavior Rate Nearly DOUBLE for Daily Marijuana Users Aged 18-34

Last Updated: Monday June 10, 2024

An April 2024 study found that daily marijuana users aged 18-34 were nearly twice as likely as their peers to exhibit violent behavior.

This metric is derived from the National Institute on Drug Abuse's "Associations of cannabis use, use frequency, and cannabis use disorder with violent behavior among young adults in the United States", which comprised 113,434 participants and used data from the 2015-2019 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health.

Among males in this age group, daily marijuana users with cannabis use disorder (CUD) demonstrated violent behavior at a rate of 3.1 percent, compared to 2.9 percent for daily users without CUD and 1.7 percent for non-users.

While the rate of violent behavior in female daily users dropped with cannabis use disorder, both daily-user rates were at least twice that of their non-using peers.
